I grew up with a superstitious mum. Whenever she saw a single magpie she would spit and whistle. If she saw two, she would be happy and say ‘Two for joy’. Later, when I met my husband, he had a superstitious Nan, so he’d salute the single magpie. Now whenever I see a pair of magpies it instantly brings me joy.
